Seal of Approval*

*or any one of ten alternate 'seal pun' titles.

Today I went down to Kaikoura to take photos of baby seals! I'm not sure why either. But they were pretty cute. Here are some photos:

The baby seals play in this waterfall. I'm not sure what the proper collective noun is for baby seals so I'm just going to go ahead and say there were a fuckload of them.

At the end of the day they go back down the river...

...to their home by the sea.

This baby seal was wise. See the knowing look in his eyes? He is the Yoda of baby seals.

These baby seals were wistful, awww

This baby seal was relaxed, athletic and startlingly photogenic. Sort of like a baby seal Tiger Woods (pre-scandal period).

This baby seal was super grumpy

and this baby seal had lost his ball!

(ok, they're the same seal. Maybe that's why he was grumpy.)

This baby seal was a total attention whore

and this baby seal was freaking the fuck out, thought he saw the Seal Police

I have no idea what this baby seal was doing but he is awesome.

And that was my day with the baby seals.

Those shots are unbelievable! How cool is it that you even have access to baby seals? (at least from MY perspective here on the east coast of the US.)

Juli - Haha! Thank you for indulging in a seal pun with me.

SueAnn - I think he was! Either that, or wondering what I was doing by his house.

Naeve - They really did. I thought they were going to be a lot less interesting. And they were all quite individual, too.

bluzdude - Thanks! They'll be at the waterfall til end Oct if you want to come across...

Donna - I know. I spent the whole morning going "ohhh... so cute."

Holly - No. Too many people around

Em - Hahahah, I know. I thought a cute seal photo story was the best way to counter that one :p

Now I know why Heidi Klum secretly married him - he's just so sleek yet charming, innocent - yet strangely wise. Hmmm.

Also - isn't Kaikoura UP? Or have you moved out of Chchch?

IT IS ALLY said...

Andrea - Certainly not! Didn't want to BREAK THE SEAL.

Chris - Oh fuck, it is up. I always do that. Not sure if Heidi thought it through 100% though, he smells AWFUL.

A fuckload is definitely the proper term for a group of baby seals.

The one who saw the police is creepy looking. The rest are adorable. I love them. And want to squish them and hold them and love them and keep them from ever getting big and gross.

Jackie - I know! They were even cuter in person. Or, I suppose, 'in seal.'

Lily - Did you! Am quite jealous, would be lovely to live around there.

Amie - Hahaha, you seal maniac! Seals do funny things to people - yesterday my boss popped out of his office, right on deadline, when we were all freaking out about various things: "Ally," he said, "Do you think that if you climbed on a seal and held on it would take you down the river and back to the sea?" "Uhhh...."

Ah! I feel so worldly, for I have seen these seals as well!

From my bus as we went along the coast in March. The driver got very excited and let us stop in the middle of a regularly scheduled bus route and get out and take photos! He was a lovely man, and they were lovely seals.

I'm glad they also brought you joy! You got much better photos than I did, though...

Claire.
